COLLEGE RULES
BEHAVIOUR Students are expected to behave at all times in a co-operative and respectful manner towards all staff, members of the public and peers whilst at school, and when travelling to and from the College. It is expected that students would not bring to school, use at school, or have at any school function, anything that may prove injurious to themselves or others. RESPECT FOR OTHERS “Others” means parents, teachers, fellow students, students from other schools, in fact people in general. 1. When with other people do not shout or use coarse language. Do not say things that embarrass people near you. 2. When using public transport find a seat if possible and remain seated. You must not travel in the intercarriage area of trains nor disturb other passengers. All students must follow the transport code of conduct, otherwise you will have your travel pass taken away. 3. When you see a visitor to the school, be polite and offer to help and direct him or her. 4. Be polite to the staff in the office, tuckshop, uniform shop and the library. 5. Wait quietly outside classrooms. 6. Do not run on verandahs, stairs or walk ways. RESPECT FOR PROPERTY 1. Do not touch or take things that do not belong to you. 2. Mark all your clothing and your other belongings with your name. 3. If any school property is damaged, tell a teacher right away. 4. Do not eat or drink in the classrooms, corridors or on the stairs. 5. Chewing gum, thick marking pens and liquid paper (or any type of white out) are banned at school and all school functions. You will be given a one hour detention if you have these at school. 6. All book hire texts are the property of the school. You must be careful not to damage them. 7. Do not move or change settings on any school property. 8. Mobile phones, electronic goods and other valuables can only be used with a teacher's permission. Any student who breaks this rule will receive a detention. The College accepts no responsibility whatsoever for the loss, theft or damage of such items. HANDS OFF POLICY One of our major aims here at Trinity Catholic College is to provide a safe environment for our staff and students. It is our moral responsibility to provide a learning environment which enables students to reach their full potential. We need to ensure that physical violence is not part of our College culture. In order to ensure this, there should be no reason for a student to touch another student, either in a rough or violent manner, or in a way which illustrates an exclusive relationship. Emphasis is always placed on appropriate behaviour. Guidelines/Procedures 1. There is a ‘hands off, step back’ expectation throughout the College. It applies to violent contact as well as boyfriend/girlfriend physical contact. 2. Any pushing or shoving or tripping is not allowed. 3. Any situation that could potentially lead to a breaking of the hands-off policy should be averted by those in the immediate vicinity. 4. Students involved in fighting or inappropriate behaviour will be immediately suspended and will not be readmitted until an interview with parents. TO FEEL SAFE AT SCHOOL • Intimidation and violence: These violate the right of people to feel safe within the school and so any form of intimidation (e.g. verbal, physical, sexual, psychological threats by an individual or group), bullying and baiting or fighting will not be tolerated. If a student is involved in such behaviours the person will be automatically suspended, parents will be required to attend an interview and assurances will need to be given by the student that such behaviour will not be repeated. Students who knowingly and intentionally involve themselves in such incidents in a secondary way will be held accountable and treated in the same way as students directly involved in such incidents. We own our own behaviour. Students should do everything in their power to peacefully resolve the tension rather than inflame it by pack-like behaviour. This also applies to outside school activities and includes Sport. • Dangerous implements/weapons: Any implement that can harm people and is not needed for schoolwork is not to be brought to school. Such item/s will be immediately confiscated and returned to parents after they have been contacted. Students found in possession of these item/s will be automatically suspended. • Stealing: What is not ours is not ours and every effort should be made to find the owner of lost property. If items are found in the yard or classroom they should be taken to the Office. Our community values honesty. Students found stealing will be automatically suspended. • Outside visitors during school time: Friends of students will NOT be allowed to make social visits during school time. Such ‘visitors’ will be asked to leave the property. Students who talk to these people while on the property will be held responsible for any inappropriate behaviour that occurs. The only ‘visitors’ allowed in the playground will be those who go to the Office and seek permission. • Transport: Students driving cars to and from school should realise the serious responsibilities they take on and always drive in a safe and considerate manner. Only students who have gained the school’s permission (from the relevant Pastoral Care Co-ordinator) have the right to drive to and from school. They are not to give lifts to other people unless authorised by the school. Students riding bikes are required to wear head protection and walk their bikes when in school grounds. Scooters and skateboards are not permitted. TO LEARN TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY • Behaviour in class: Everyone has a right to a good education, nobody has a right to interfere with another’s education. Students should assist positively in the learning process. Not co-operating with the teacher’s requests, continually talking in a disruptive manner, making unnecessary nuisance noises or being argumentative all work against enabling the class to learn. Students who cannot abide by the basic rules for orderly classroom management will be confronted by the teacher and/or Pastoral Care Co-ordinator and will be suspended from classes until assurances can be given by the student that the unacceptable behaviour will stop. Parents will be notified and interviewed when judged appropriate. • Attendance at school and punctuality to class: It is a requirement of the Board of Studies of NSW that students attend lessons to the satisfaction of the school for the School Certificate or Higher School Certificate to be awarded to them. 85% attendance is the minimum acceptable for issue of the S.C. and H.S.C. Unless you are ill you should be at school each day. All absences require a written explanation. • Movement to class: When the bell goes at the end of recess and lunch, students are to move promptly and co-operatively to class. If a student arrives to class after the second bell, he/she will receive an academic concern stamp in their diary. If you are late to class three times, a detention will be issued. • Cigarettes /alcohol / illegal drugs at school, school functions or in school uniform will not be tolerated. If a student is found with any of these items they will be automatically suspended. Parents will be required to attend an interview. TO BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT Something we must all realise is that behaviour is a choice. We decide on the way we behave. Own your own behaviour. • Speaking to each other: We should always converse in a respectful manner, using polite language like ‘Please’, ‘Thank you’ and ‘Excuse me’, not raising our voices or yelling. We can insult a person by the manner in which we speak to them. • Loud Noises: Our behaviour must always be dignified. Such things as ‘Group Noise’ or nuisance noises are usually offensive. These lower our personal dignity. • Yard cleanliness: All of us should contribute to keeping where we live or play clean. It is important to place our rubbish in the bins provided and assist in keeping the school clean even if it is not our personal rubbish that we pick up. If asked to pick up papers, students should respond quickly and politely. CONSEQUENCES There are various ways students can interfere with the rights of others, with varying degrees of seriousness. For minor situations the teacher may just make the student aware of the issue and rely on the good common sense of the student to ensure the incident is not repeated. For more serious situations the student may be referred to the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator / KLA Co-ordinator or a person with higher authority. A major emphasis in all our attempts to develop more responsible student behaviour is to bring parents or guardians into the conversation. Teachers see themselves in partnership with parents in their attempts to have students recognise and change unacceptable behaviour. So parents will be contacted sooner rather than later and will always be required to come to the school for an interview when a student is suspended from school. Remember, teachers always attempt to distinguish between the misbehaviour and the person. They dislike the behaviour but not the student.

Years 9-12 must wear the College blazer to and from school. All items listed above are only available at the College Uniform Shop. Other ‘look-alikes’ are not permitted, with the intention of keeping the uniform at a high standard. SPORTS UNIFORM College sports polo shirt, College shorts, predominantly white sports socks that cover the ankle. College tracksuit is the only type of tracksuit to be worn and may only be worn to and from school on Thursdays and special sports days. It may not be worn to and from school on any other day. Students cannot wear the pullover without the tracksuit top. Sports shoes – should be mostly white with laces or velcro. No slip on styles acceptable. 2. HAIR GIRLS Hair is to be neat and clean and of natural colour. Styles are to be reasonably conservative and appropriate for school. All extremes of style, including hair extensions and dreadlocks, are to be avoided and should be guided by common sense. Girls with long hair (shoulder length and longer) are to tie it back neatly and keep it off the face for health and safety reasons. There is to be no excessive use of any hair products. (This means that it should not be noticeable.) BOYS Hair is to be clean, neat, off the collar, of even grade and of natural colour. Styles are to be reasonably conservative and appropriate for school. All extremes of style are to be avoided and should be guided by common sense. Examples of unacceptable styles include what are known as ‘undercuts’, ‘layers’, ‘steps’, ‘lines’, ‘dreadlocks’, ‘spikes’, ‘No. 1’ and ‘No. 2’, grades, pony tails, marked contrasts in length or shape, long fringes or excessive use of any hair product. (This means that it should not be noticeable.) These lists of unacceptable styles are not exhaustive. If there is any doubt, the Campus Director’s judgement is final. 3. JEWELLERY AND MAKE-UP The College limits the amount and type of jewellery students can wear to school because these items are seen to be inappropriate, unsafe and/or unnecessary. Some jewellery items ‘cheapen’ the presentation of the uniform, others can put a student’s safety at risk when the student is participating in certain sporting, science or technology activities. A watch is allowed. Neck chains with a Christian religious symbol may be worn. No neck chains may be worn outside the uniform. Rings, bangles and bracelets are not allowed. Girls are allowed to wear only ONE PAIR of simple ear studs or sleepers in the lower lobe. Boys are not permitted to wear earrings or studs. No other form of body piercing is allowed. Unacceptable items, if worn, will be confiscated. They will be kept in the College Office for safe keeping and returned to the student at the end of that term. Boys need to be clean shaven and have no side burns. The wearing of make-up with the school uniform is inappropriate and will not be permitted. Nails must be clean, trim and natural. Clear nail polish is allowed. 4. SCHOOL SHOES Shoes are expected to be polished. Boots, buckled and platform shoes are not permitted. 5. SCHOOL BAGS Students are required to have the College bag. Graffiti, stickers, pen or texta decorations, etc. on these bags are not permitted. 6. SUN PROTECTION Students are encouraged to protect themselves from the sun. They are advised to wear the College cap when they are exposed to the sun for any length of time. The College cap is compulsory for Years 7 and 8 students, and for all other year groups participating in outdoor sporting activities.
STUDENT PROCEDURES
1. ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL Parents/Guardians should notify the College of their son’s/daughter’s absence by phone on the same day and also explain the absence in writing upon their return to school. Any requests for extended leave should be made in writing to the Principal. 2. LATENESS TO SCHOOL Students are expected to be at school and ready for the commencement of the lessons at 8.30 a.m. Students who do arrive late are to report to the College Office where they will enter their name, Pastoral Care class and time-of-arrival in the ‘LATE TO SCHOOL’ book. The Secretary will then stamp their College Diary and mark their time-of-arrival on it. The student will then go directly to their class and show this stamp to their teacher. Persistent lateness, without reasonable excuse, will be followed up by the Pastoral Care teacher and Pastoral Care Co-ordinator. 3. EARLY LEAVE FROM THE COLLEGE Parents/Guardians are requested to avoid making appointments for their sons/daughters during school hours. This also applies to Thursdays, since sport is organised in the afternoon and is a compulsory College activity. • If an appointment is unavoidable, or a student needs to leave school early, the student must bring a note of explanation, dated and signed by parents/guardians. This letter is to be shown to the Pastoral Care teacher who sends the student to the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator. • The Pastoral Care Co-ordinator or Assistant Pastoral Care Co-ordinator will sign the letter and issue the student with a ‘Leave slip’. The time the student is allowed to leave class will be indicated on the Leave slip. • The student then returns to Administration and gives the parent/guardian letter to the Pastoral Care teacher for filing. • When it is time for the student to leave, he/she shows the Leave slip to the class teacher, leaves the class and goes directly to the College Office and signs the ‘LEAVE’ book before leaving the College grounds. If a student returns to the College they are to report to the Office and countersign the Leave Book.
